NTU among top 20 technology universities 南大跃升世界顶尖20强理工大学 The university advances 11 positions to 15th place in the global league of technology universities; it also records higher scores in five of the six categories measured in the 2006 World University Rankings. NTU continues to rank among the world's best, according to the Times Higher Education Supplement (THES). In the league of the "World's top 100 in technology", NTU advanced from 33rd position in 2004 to 26th last year, to 15th in the latest ranking exercise, where it outperformed well-known technology universities such as Melbourne University, Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, Georgia Institute of Technology, Ecole Polytechnique and University of Michigan. In the "Top 200" list, NTU ranked well within the top 100; it tied with Ivy League Dartmouth College and was ranked above institutions such as Boston University, Bristol University, Seoul National University and the Indian Institutes of Technology. The annual THES rankings, published on 6 October, are based on an assessment of six indicators - academic peer review (40%), citations per faculty member (20%), recruiter review/graduate employability (10%), student-faculty ratio (20%), international faculty (5%), and international students (5%). NTU bettered its 2005 scores in all but one of the six categories measured. It notched up an overall score of 43.7, bettering last year's 38.2 rating in the UK-based rankings. Surpassing even the three Asian universities in the top 20, NTU garnered a good score for international students (56/100), indicating its attractiveness to overseas students. NTU's score of 77/100 for international faculty was also far better than the 5/100 achieved by the highest-ranked Asian university - Beijing University, in 14th position. In terms of the employability of its graduates, NTU registered a three-fold improvement over its 2005 score, outperforming the California Institute of Technology and Australian National University, ranked 7th and 16th respectively. Improved scores in most categories and overall "This year, we are pleased to see that the scores in most categories have improved, and so has our overall score. This is encouraging as it goes to show our efforts are paying off," says Acting Provost Prof Er Meng Hwa. He believes that NTU, ranked 61st overall, will be on the right track if it continues to pursue the improvements needed for its students and faculty to excel. "For Singapore to have two of our universities consistently ranked among the Top 100 universities of the world is something we should be proud of. In NTU, our policy is to pursue the improvements we feel we need and let the rankings take care of themselves - especially since the criteria and weights applied change from year to year. While we can expect fluctuations, the rankings have been largely consistent." He adds that NTU "will continue to focus on improving what will make a university great. We will keep our sights set on delivering a holistic education to our students, and on our quality of teaching and research." In the World University Rankings, 40% of the total marks depended on the views of 3,703 research-active academics from around the world. These academics were asked to identify the best universities for research within their own field of expertise. The academics were chosen by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, consultants to THES. QS, a network for careers and education, designed the research and collected the data, while THES allocated the weightings. © Corporate Communications Office
